Evolution equipped the horse to graze on pasture consuming high fiber forage for about 18 hours per day. Chewing this fibrous material stimulated the production of as much as 60 Liters of saliva daily. This saliva contains Bicarbonate which buffers and neutralizes the 10 – 30 Liters of acid produced by the horse’s stomach every day.
When forage intake is reduced and concentrate feeds like starchy grains are added to the diet to boost the energy supply for work, the production of saliva drops but the production of stomach acid continues causing the stomach fluid to become more strongly acidic. This strong acid can cause injury similar to chemical burns leading to ulceration of the upper part of the stomach lining called the squamous epithelium. This is ESGD or Equine Squamous Gastric Disease.
Gastri-Soothe contains a special blend of Magnesium Oxide drawn from multiple sources each with different particle size and conferring specific kinetics which result in both fast acting and slow release buffering effects. By neutralizing the stomach acid Gastri-Soothe raises gastric fluid pH and helps prevent the acid attack on the squamous epithelium.
European trials fed this unique form of Magnesium Oxide to a group of 40 trotters in a double blind study which demonstrated a significant reduction in ulcer scores in the treatment group when compared to a control group over a 30 day period.
