Glycogen

Glycogen is a polymer comprised of numerous glucose molecules chemically bound together. It is made from glucose as an energy storage compound held mainly in the liver and muscles. When a rapid release of energy is needed glycogen can be broken down to yield glucose to provide an energy substrate. Glycogen can also be broken down to maintain normal blood levels of glucose between meals or during fasting.

The equivalent energy storage molecule used by plants is starch.
