One of the water soluble B vitamins which plays an important role in energy metabolism, specifically the creation of the energy transfer molecule NAD and NADP. Both green forage and cereal grains contain Niacin and deficiency has not been recorded in horses. A suggested requirement of 0.40mg/kgBW/Day appears in INRA 1990, but supplementation has not been found to alter energy metabolism in racehorses. Normal diets are in all probability adequate for Niacin, but most manufactured feeds are fortified with it anyway.
